Meego For Nokia N900 is updated regualarly. As we all know the Nokia N900 is the first ARM device for Meego.

Now the updated version is 1.0.90.2.20100910.1

Meego Developer Preview for Handset is available for download. But Nokia N900 version is not yet released.fatalsaint from Meego Forum gives us the steps to get Meego Preview in Nokia N900.

Dont try this if you dont know what you are doing…

These steps work for Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx. N900 + MicroSD card required. Flasher-3.5 required. For Fedora, use the wiki, but compile the flasher from GIT, not the repo, and use my m-i-c command in the script below.

1) grab the N900 MeeGo kickstart file from here.
2) Move it to where you will be building all of this. If you copy/paste from my script below, that’s going to be in ~/build
3) Add the Ubuntu MeeGo repositories to /etc/apt/sources.list.

4) Script. Copy/paste this to a terminal.

5) Connect your booted N900 to your computer. Select “Mass Storage mode”. In Ubuntu, determine which device it assigned your SD card. Mine did /dev/sdc.
6)Copy filesystem to N900 SD card. Replace “DEVICE” with your N900 External SD Card device (change XXXX’s).

7)Mount the SD card, replace /dev/sdc1 with your device and first partition.

8)Edit rc.local:

sudo vi mount/etc/rc.local

9)Add the following line, above the touch line

echo 255 > /sys/class/backlight/acx565akm/brightness

10)Unmount

sudo umount mount

11)Disconnect and shut off N900.
12)Run flasher (change XXXX’s)

sudo flasher-3.5 -l -b -k meego-handset-armv7l-n900-nokia-closed-1.0.80.8.20100630-1.0.80.20100630.XXXX-vmlinuz-2.6.35~rc3-119.1-n900

13)When prompted for USB device, connect N900, turn on and hold “u”

This video shows Early build (Developer Preview) of MeeGo running on a handset (Aava) which is not feature complete.

As expected Meego.com released the MeeGo v1.1 Handset Developer Preview. The Nokia N900 is not supported in this release. As we can see Nokia N900 in supported Hardware page we are expecting its release soon. But N900 developers if you are interested you can start to build an N900 image Download the N900 file.

The MeeGo project is happy to announce “Day 1″ of the MeeGo Handset user experience project. Many of you will remember this “Day 1″ concept from March, when we first made the MeeGo core OS source code available and started development towards the MeeGo 1.0 release. Today, the handset baseline source code is available to the development community. This code is being actively developed as MeeGo 1.1, which is scheduled for release in October. The team has been preparing MeeGo Gitorious with all the sources and infrastructure to perform the weekly builds for MeeGo 1.1 development. But the Developers who wish to build an N900 image Download the N900 file and start building.

Known Issues and Workarounds

• X crash with lock screen

Description: Double tapping the lock button crashes X. Not always reproducible. Lock button is located under Home -> Apps -> second screen (slide to left) -> fourth icon.
Workaround: Please do not double-tap the lock button.
Bug 3375 – Unlock screen crashes X by tapping lock icon

• White screen

Description: Tapping and dragging the top tool bar show white screen.
Workaround: On white screen, tap where the home button should be, and the UI reappears.
Bug 3289 – [REG] White screen shows instead of drop down menu after tapping the system UI

• Home screen button only works once per application

Description: Home screen button works only once, clicking it second time has no response.
Workaround: Do not tap home screen button two times, or do not use it at all. Application switcher is still very buggy.
Bug 2600 – [REG] No response when clicking application home button the second time

• Failure to connect to WiFi network crashes the settings application

Description: If establishing a connection to WiFi network fails, the settings application will crash.
Workaround: Re-launch the settings application from Home -> Settings (Second icon on bottom tool bar).
Bug 811 – Click Failure network in WIFI network list can crash Settings

• Cannot return to ‘People’ application once other application is launched from it

Description: When an application is launched from the ‘People’ application, for example, from the SMS application launched by tapping on ‘SMS’ against a mobile phone number, there is no way to return to ‘People’ application.
Workaround: Close the newly launched application to return to the ‘People’ application.
Bug 3170 – People: No way to return to People from SMS/Dialer/Email

• Scrolling (sliding) picture list to left/right shows two partial pictures

Description: In the ‘Pictures’ application, when sliding a picture to left/right, to see next/previous picture, it shows two partial pictures.
Workaround: Continue sliding in the same direction to view next/previous picture.
Bug 3532 – [REG] Two incomplete photos showed simultaneously in the screen, when screen scrolled towards left/right side in photo view

• Clicking ‘All’ button pops contextual menu in ‘Pictures’

Description: A contextual menu pops up when ‘All’ button is clicked, to view all photos while browsing photos in the ‘Pictures’ application.
Workaround: Click outside the pop-up menu to make the pop-up go away.
Bug 3481 – [Photo viewer] The contextual menu will be popped when click the “All” button in the title bar

• Text corruption with on-screen keyboard

Description: Tapping on the ‘Sym’ button three times garbles the button text on the on-screen keyboard.
Workaround: No known workaround. The keyboard is still functional, but it’s difficult to type when you can’t see the button text.
Bug 2645 – Corruption of text of VKB in input field

• QT Fennec scrolling and orientation switching

Description: Switching orientation from landscape to portrait causes an issue where portions of the page extends off the right side of the screen. As a result the portion of the page and the control strip on the right side become not visible.
Workaround: No known workaround.
Bug 3452 – QT Fennec doesn’t recalculate scrolling size after orientation switching

Meego.com released rich user experience for Netbooks on May. And they promised MeeGo Handset user experience will be available in June. Also the Meego core for N900 is released with the Netbook Meego. Meego site says we can expect Meego for Handset this month end i.e., tomorrow.

We also tracked the Meego Handset Project Page in Gitorious which revealed the overall process is done and the release is ready. The last status update is June 24 which says Author Names are added to the release.

Some Interesting Info’s about Meego For Handset from MyNokiaBlog:

1. Application menu scrolls to the right instead of down.

Applications are presented in a 4 x 4 grid. In the case where there are more than 16 applications, more pages of the same grid are added to the right. Paging through the different grids is done by swiping the current grid off screen, hence bringing the new one into view.

2. Task manager is similar to WebOS’s card view and Symbian^3’s visual multitasker, but if you pinch multi-touch, it becomes grid view!

The default view of the switcher presents the latest accessed task in focus, with the other, different tasks running to the right. Thumbnails are presented in chronological order, as they are opened. It is possible to browse through the thumbnails, one by one, by slowly dragging them, or to use a quick swipe to rapidly pan from one side of the list to the other. Users can use a pinch multi-touch motion to change the switcher into an overview mode. By pinching in, thumbnails move into a grid display.

3. Portrait and Landscape keyboard

MeeGo provides support to both virtual and hardware keyboards. It has a portrait and landscape layout, opening according to the orientation it is being called from. If the user rotates the device, the layout is smoothly changed according to the new orientation.

4. View Menu and Homescreen button are similar to how it is currently on Nokia N900 (Maemo)

The View Menu is accessible by tapping the Title Bar. Tapping the Title Bar, the content area outside the View Menu or Close closes it. The homescreen button closes the view menu and takes the user back to the switcher

5. Status Bar and Notifications similar to Android

The Status Bar is the vertical box at the top of the UI. The main use of the status bar is to show signal strength, time and battery life. Status Bar also supports notifications to help remind the user of specific events/alerts. The Notification Drawer is accessible by dragging The Status Bar. A clear button allows the user to dismiss all listed notifications.

6. Centralized account management

The account management is centralized in the device: there is one place where the user can add and manage all the various online accounts used in the device applications. Each account can have a separate page for settings, if needed.

Meego 1.0 was released for Netbooks and Meego core was released for Nokia N900. Nokia promised Meego for Handsets this month end. This plan reveals we can get Meego V1.1 only on OctoberAnd also Nokia told us no official Meego for N900. We can have the ARM version in Nokia N900. MeeGo 1.1 Release Plan reveals that we can download early build to test only if you are experienced.

Nokia Conversations just said that Nokia N900 got a PR1.2 Update and also they got another news for Nokia N900 owners.

Nokia says that

It have no plans for releasing a full scale commercial version of Meego For N900″

It shows that the Nokia not willing to let Maemo down for Meego and N900 will be the last Maemo device.

MeegoV1.0 Preview Version out Now. The new version is available for download and it is named as Meego Preview. I just found MeegoV1.0 Preview into Meego Repositories and found Meego Preview is released silently a long ago.

The preview version i found is in the V0.9 folder of repositories. This Meego UI looks like Meego For Invehicle.
