MeeGo Summit FI is a developer oriented 2-day summit happening in Tampere, Finland. It is packed with MeeGo and Qt sessions and showcases. Today in Meego summit Nokia announced that the Developer Edition of Meego 1.2 for N900 will be released as a full functional operating system by June end to increase Meego users. From the image above we can see that they have already made Voice call, Fennec browser and camera to work in Meego 1.2 DE for N900. N900 Developer Edition project is carried out by 20+ Nokia funded full time developers and 10+ volunteer developers.

As Meego team promised the uboot for PR1.3 is available in extras devel. The uboot simplify the Dual boot of Meego and Maemo.

Check out the instructions after the break.

This is only for developers beginners please stay away if you dont know what you are doing.

From Meego WIki:

WARNING: This guide is experimental and everything you do with this guide is at your own responsibility and risk

This is a simplified guide for dual-booting with u-boot on Nokia N900.

You must be using the PR1.3 kernel and nothing else. You will likely end up in a reboot loop if you don’t have this otherwise. To check this, in Maemo X-Terminal, type “uname -a” and make sure you see:

Linux Nokia-N900 2.6.28-omap1 #1 PREEMPT Fri Aug 6 11:50:00 EEST 2010 armv7l unknown

and “dpkg -l | grep kernel-modules” should show 2.6.28-20103103+0m5.

You will need a 2 GB microSD card or bigger.

1. Enable the maemo.org extras-devel repository, see http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-devel (The software hosted in extras-devel is not ready for normal users! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t play with it unless you really know what you are doing. It is recommended to disable the extras-devel repository after you have installed the package below, and do not install any updated packages that you might be notified of while extras-devel is enabled. Be ready to file proper bug reports instead of posting complaints.)

2. Install the ‘uboot-pr13′ package from ‘System’ section

3. Verify it’s installed by restarting your N900. A penguin should show up at startup and U-boot will be mentioned, let it time out and boot into Maemo.

4. From http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/meego-codedrop.php (type in your IMEI), download meego-handset-armv7l-n900-final-mod-1.1.0.0.20101101.3-mmcblk0p.raw.bz2 — we require IMEI/EULA but in practice the images are redistributable under certain conditions, see the license files for more information.

5. Follow http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/N900/Install/MMC#Installing_Rootfs_on_external_MMC_card and write the image to your microSD

6. Insert the microSD and turn on the N900, let U-boot menu time out and MeeGo will boot.

7. Enjoy!

To boot back in to Maemo turn off your phone, then either remove the microSD and then turn on your phone, or turn it on and interrupt the boot during the countdown by pressing a button and then type “run noloboot”.

If you want to remove U-boot you can as root in Maemo run: apt-get install –reinstall kernel-flasher

We reported earlier that Nokia have released the firmware update PR1.3 for Nokia N900. This firmware update comes with a patch which enables developers to dual boot Meego and Maemo in Nokia N900. Meego official wiki have released the instructions for dual booting Meego and Maemo in Nokia N900.

Detailed instructions after the break.

Warning:

This feature is currently experimental and intended for experienced users only. Several commands here are dangerous if executed incorrectly and may damage your Maemo installation or your N900. If you are unfamiliar with image creation, the flasher and MeeGo you are strongly advised not to proceed any further.

This dual booting is made possbile using u-boot. Currently this process is the only way to dual-boot on the device without requiring another computer. It is not very user friendly and is only provided as a stop-gap until packaged Maemo software replaces it.

Get over to Meego WIKI for the detailed instructions.

Nokia’s CTO Rich Green says

You can buy a Nokia smartphone confidently that any improvements introduced later to the Symbian platform, such as the user interface, can be made available to download on your device as well. No need to wait for Symbian^4 -- the improvements we were planning for Symbian^4 will be introduced as and when they become available. In fact, we will no longer be talking about Symbian^3 or Symbian^4 at all – it will be one constantly evolving and constantly improving platform.

Nokia also announced to unify environments for Symbian and MeeGo they are adopting Qt, and only Qt, as its application development framework.

While the Stephen Elop Nokia’s new CEO delievered some great speech. Have a look at his Speech below:

On Nokia overall:

In the five weeks since joining Nokia, I have begun the journey of listening, learning and adjusting. Indeed, I have already had the opportunity to interact with literally thousands of employees, as well as customers and partners.

At the highest level, what I have initially found is a company with many great strengths and a history of achievements that are second to none in the industry. And yet our company faces a remarkably disruptive time in the industry, with recent results demonstrating that we must re-assess our role in and our approach to this industry.

I would characterize Nokia as a landscape of unpolished gems. Whether it is the degree of intimacy we have established with millions of consumers around the world, our naturally aligned worldview with operators, ground-breaking technological capabilities in everything from optics to nanotechnology to haptics, our strengths in emerging markets, or our assets in location-based services, there is an embarrassment of riches within Nokia.

On Qt:

Perhaps the greatest strength in the area of platforms, however, is also another example of an unpolished gem, and that relates to the use of Qt – spelled Q T – as a cross-platform environment for the development of applications that can reach, ultimately, across much of our portfolio. Qt will offer application breadth and reach that is unrivaled in the industry.

On MeeGo:

There have been various comments made at various points in time about the anticipated availability of our first MeeGo device and versions of the MeeGo software. My first impressions of our MeeGo work inspires both confidence and excitement, however it is also clear to me that our first MeeGo device will be a 2011 event.

Nokia N900 the ultimate maemo device is used as the official ARM device for Meego developement. The Meego blog have been testing Meego and Meego in N900 is pretty mature than the first one. They have implemented 3G audio call functionality with proper ofono signaling and pulse audio stack with a new open source modem adaptation for N900.

Harri Hakulinen have posted a great news on Meego that would make every N900 jump in joy. He posted that N900 is getting PR1.3 update with a dual boot option to boot Meego or Maemo.

Words from Him:

The PR 1.3 update is quite close now, and with that you can easily dual boot between Maemo and Meego on your N900. There is also a possibility of developing applications supporting both operating systems, based on Qt and Qt Mobility APIs on the Maemo side. It means that you can develop once in PC with Qt Creator, and test your applications on both Maemo and MeeGo, directly on your N900 device!

And he also added that “We are now in last phase of MeeGo 1.1 finalization, focusing on fixing final release blocker bugs, making sure that everything that is in already actually works, and that the user experience of the first MeeGo version with the Handset UX is good.

He also said that “Development of the MeeGo 1.2 release has already started. On N900 side, we will continue by integrating some interesting stuff from the latest Nokia and development repositories, including, SGX drivers, camera stack, and accelerated video decoders. We are trying to keep the 1.2 version as usable as possible, but during development, some images will work better than others, as usual.”

We are expecting PR1.3 to hit N900 in November as there is a big Meego Conference in Dublin in mid-November. He promised that N900 will get Meego before the event.
